The Life of St. Joseph

Third Graders studied the life of St. Joseph. Each student was then asked to write a paragraph on some aspect of St. Joseph’s life and create an original drawing illustrating the paragraph. Here are the beautiful results of that assignment.

Joseph as a Boy

Joseph was holy when he was a child in Nazareth. Joseph’s father probably taught Joseph to use his carpenter tools. Joseph would have made shelves when he was a child. Joseph sometimes helped his father make furniture, shelves, tables, and chairs. Joseph’s father taught Joseph to speak nicely to people.

Joseph’s Staff Grew Lilies

In the town of Nazareth, all of the men wanted Mary to marry them. So one day God told Mary to make all the men lay down their staffs.

The next day Joseph’s staff grew lilies. Then Mary knew whom to wed.

Joseph and Mary Go to Bethlehem

They traveled to Bethlehem from Nazareth. The governor wanted to count the people. They had to go to the towns where they were born. Joseph was from Bethlehem. Mary had to go also. They were expecting a baby.

Joseph Met Mary the First Time

Joseph was commanded by an angel to marry, Jesus Mother. When Joseph saw Mary he thought she was beautiful. She was very holy.

When the Angel Tells Joseph to Marry Mary

The Angel said to Joseph, ”Marry her Joseph!” The next morning his staff was filled with lilies. So Mary knew that Joseph was going to be her husband.

Joseph Marries Mary

Joseph was told by an Angel to marry Mary. In the Bible it says that Mary and Joseph have a quiet ceremony. They made Nazareth their hometown until Joseph had to go to his hometown.

Jesus Is Born

Mary and Joseph got to Bethlehem there was no room for them. So Jesus was born in a stable. Angels and shepherds came to worship him. When Jesus was a baby, he was the best.

Jesus Gets Presents from the Wisemen

The Wisemen gave gold, myrrh, and frankincense. They followed a star to find Jesus. Herod, who was king, wanted to kill Jesus. King Herod asked the Wisemen where Jesus lived. They went home a different way so they would not have to tell Herod where Jesus lived.

Joseph Was a Carpenter

Joseph made tables, chairs, and other kinds of furniture. He sold these items to earn money and to buy everything Joseph, Mary, and Jesus needed. He is the patron saint of workers. The feast day of Saint Joseph the Worker is May 1.

Joseph Leading His Family to Egypt

The angel told Joseph to go to Egypt where there was safety. He packed up the donkey and Mary and Jesus and left for Egypt from Bethlehem. They stayed for 2 years. Then they left for Nazareth where they really lived.

Jesus Learning from Joseph

Joseph was not Jesus’ father but Joseph treated Jesus like his own child. Joseph taught Jesus how to use the tools of a carpenter. Also he taught Jesus how to be nice.  We can all learn from St. Joseph that you should treat others nicely.

Mary and Joseph Lose Jesus in the Temple

Mary and Joseph went to the temple with Jesus. On the way home Mary thought Jesus was with Joseph. Joseph thought Jesus was with Mary. They had left him at the Temple. When they found him he was preaching in the Temple.

Joseph Dies

Mary and Jesus were there when Joseph died. He died before Jesus was crucified. His family was very sad. One of his feast days is March 19.
