Girls - Grades PK-8

Girls in PK-4 wear the designated jumper; girls in Grades 5-8 wear the uniform skirt. The jumper and the skirt must be long enough to touch the floor when kneeling. Many girls remove their skirts or jumpers for P.E. class, so shorts may be worn under the uniform.

Girls’ blouses must be white or red in color, with a rounded or pointed collar, such as a knit polo, a button-down oxford style, or a turtleneck. No pattern or emblem (except the St. Joseph School emblem) is permitted on the shirt. Blouses/shirts must be tucked in at all times. At the end of the day, they must remain tucked in until the student has left the premises or gotten into a car.

Girls in all grades may wear navy blue slacks – no jeans, knit pants, or sweatpants are permissible.

Girls must wear socks that rise above the ankles, leotards, or leggings in red, white, navy blue, or black. No baggy leggings or sweatpants are permissible.

Girls may wear one matching pair of earrings, only in the earlobe. They must be no longer than the bottom of the earlobe. Bangs must be above the eyebrows or pulled back with barrettes or pins. The use of hair color is not allowed. Make-up is permitted for those in grades 6-8 and moderation is expected. Girls in Grades 6-8 may wear non-distracting, plain colored nail polish and younger girls may wear clear finish on their nails. Fake nails should not be worn to school.

Boys - Grades PK-8

Boys in Grades PK-8 wear navy blue pants. Pants with belt loops require a belt. Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten boys are not required to wear a belt. Pants worn sagging or “slacking” are not permitted. Corduroys are permitted as long as the style is the same as the designated navy blue pants. Jean-style corduroys are not acceptable.

Boys’ shirts must be red or white in color with a collar, such as a knit polo, a button-down oxford style, or a turtleneck. No pattern or emblem (except the St. Joseph School emblem) is permitted on the shirt. Shirts must be tucked in at all times. At the end of the day, they must remain tucked in until the student has left the premises or gotten into a car.

Boys must wear socks that rise above the ankles in red, white, navy blue, or black.

Hair must not touch the top of the collar, nor be longer than the eyebrows. Hair must be above the ears. No extreme hair styles, suchas tails, color, highlights, initials, designs, etc.

Watches may be worn, but bracelets, necklaces, and earrings are not permitted. Religious medals may be worn.

General Factors for Girls and Boys

Sweaters/sweatshirts must be navy blue, red, or white, cardigan or pullover in style. Hooded sweatshirts may be worn only during recess. Students may attach their St. Joseph athletic letter to the sweater.

When wearing a belt, the entire length of the belt must be worn in the belt loops.

Due to recess and physical education, students in PK - Grade 5 must wear only non-marring, non-blinking sneakers or athletic shoes with heels. Shoes with rollers may not be worn to school. Since students in Grades 6-8 do not have recess, they may wear leather shoes with chunky or platform heels. Sandals or open-toe shoes are not permitted.

All students must wear non-marring sneakers for P.E.

Official scout uniforms may be worn on the meeting day.

During the months of August, September, and May, students may wear navy blue walking shorts instead of pants, jumpers, or skirts. Uniform shirts, socks, and shoes remain the same.

Dress Code for Jean Days

Usually on the third Friday of each month, students have the option to participate in Jean Day. Students choosing to participate must bring a cash donation during the week and a food item. The money is placed in the Children’s Fund, which helps support field trips, special programs, awards assembly items, etc. The food item is taken to the Catholic Charities Food Pantry and distributed to those in need of assistance.

Students participating in Jean Day may wear properly fitting regular blue denim jeans that are in good condition – no khaki pants, no jogging or Capri pants. Shirts must have no words, logos, or pictures on them except those with St. Joseph School logos or Christian messages. Shirts and tops must be long enough to be tucked in. They must also be long enough to remain tucked in when the hand is raised above the head. Sweatshirts or sweatpants are not permitted unless special notice has been given. Those who choose not to follow the guidelines will be required to phone their parents to bring proper attire.

When students celebrate their birthday, they have the option to “dress down”, following the attire for Jean Day. Should their birthdays fall on a Saturday or Sunday, the students may dress down on the Friday before their birthday or the following Monday. Summer birthdays may be celebrated during the school year. Students must schedule this celebration with their teacher.

Field Trips

Teachers, in conjunction with their instruction, make planned trips to various places of educational value during the year. A permission form for each trip is sent home, signed by the parent, and returned to school. A phone call will not replace a permission form. No signed permission form – no field trip.

Field trips are a privilege. Students may be denied participation if they fail to meet academic or behavioral requirements as set by the teacher.

During field trips, students are expected to respond immediately to directions from their teacher(s) and accompanying adults. Polite and respectful behavior is a must.

A child four years of age through seven years of age, when the child weighs less than 80 pounds or is less than four feet nine inches in height, must have a child safety passenger restraining system that includes a booster seat and a standard passenger safety restraining system (seat belt).

A child eight years of age up to fourteen years of age, when the child weighs more than 80 pounds or is at least four feet nine inches in height, must have a standard passenger safety restraining system (seat belt).
