Dear St. Joseph School Alumni,
Welcome to the St. Joseph Alumni web site. It is a privilege to have attended the oldest private Catholic School on the west side of Wichita, Kansas. The tradition of Catholic education has been a part of our community for nine decades. We have had 20 principals, with only one for more than a decade, Sr. Mary Dorene Good, BVM, 1976 – 1988.
Mr. Dan McAdam, the principal of St. Joseph School, has asked me to help develop the web site for our alumni, and we are brainstorming what we want to do with it. We want to hear from you and know more about what you’ve been doing since you were an SJS student, plus your ideas of what you’d like to see on this site, especially in the Newsletter, so please submit your stories here.
I will go first. My name is Fr. Lawrence Carney and I am a priest for the Diocese of Wichita, Kansas. I was born on November 11, 1975 here in Wichita. I was baptized at St. Joseph and received spiritual and intellectual formation until my graduation from 8th grade. I am a Bishop Carroll and University of Kansas graduate.
Three years after college, at the age of 25, I was accepted by the Diocese of Wichita for formation in the priesthood at Mt. St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland. After 5-1/2 years I was ordained and assigned as an associate pastor for St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, another west side church.
When I was in kindergarten, I received my calling to the priesthood by the old-time Fr. Miller, C.Ss.R. I remember the very place I received this call; I remember Fr. Miller’s face in that kindergarten room.
The Holy Eucharist is now exposed at St. Joseph for perpetual adoration, where we adore our Good God. This is my favorite place to pray in Wichita because of the quietness and the beautiful and comfortable handmade chairs. Come visit this room to refresh your tired body and soul. But first call the parish office for the code, or you might be locked outside.
Pax (Peace), Fr. Lawrence Carney Class of 1990
